Georgie glanced up from her coffee, a mischievous twinkle in her eye. ‘You should do it.’

I stared down at my mini magdalena – Spanish breakfast muffins I’d begun making when we’d first moved to the outskirts of Madrid. To give myself time to think of an appropriate reply, I tore one in half and popped a piece in my mouth. As I chewed, I raised a hand to shield my eyes from the sun and gazed out at the countryside on our doorstep.

After a few moments, I looked up to find her still watching me from across the patio table – that amused grin still firmly in place. She had pulled her blond curls away from her face in a sloppy bun. Loose strands caught the gentle breeze, giving her a slight halo effect.

I swallowed the last of my muffin, the delicate lemon flavour still lingering on my tongue. ‘Do what?’ I took a sip of my black coffee and watched my wife.

Why should I buy direct from the author?

When I published my first book in January 2020, someone at work laughed and asked me when I was going to quit my job.

There's this perception out there that authors are wealthy people. And I'm sure the big names (e.g. Richard Osman, Stephen King, John Scalzi, etc.) are doing just fine.

But it's not like that for indie authors. It's tough out there. There are great, amazing things about being an indie author. But most of us aren't making bank.

You know who is making money out of books? Jeff Bezos, CEO of Amazon.

You may have noticed a move in recent years of indie authors selling their books directly to you. There's a reason for that.

If you buy a book for 0.99 from Amazon, the author gets to keep maybe 0.26 of that. Maybe. It depends on the file size. And they won't even get that for around 3 months. But if you buy a book from an author for 0.99, the author gets to keep around 0.83. And we get that money within days.

Because that first book I mentioned? Four years later, it hasn't come close to paying for itself.

If you can't buy direct, libraries are a great way to get books for free while still helping authors get their fair share.

    What's the deal with audiobooks?

I'm a big believer in inclusivity and accessibility. Ideally, I want all my books available in all formats. But, from a pragmatic standpoint, they're expensive to produce. For this reason, it's unlikely this book will be available in audio format anytime soon.

Before they were tasked with planning the first permanent colony on Mars, Gurdeep and Georgie were just an ordinary couple.

One of them's got a secret … and no idea what to do with it.

The Invite is a short prequel in the Devon Island Mars Colony series. This short work is set two weeks before the start of Devon Island. This series is a work of neurodiverse, culturally diverse, gender-bendy, socio-politico-economic, drunken-arguments-in-the-pub science fiction – not bang-bang-pew-pew

This was a nice short intro to some pivotal Devon Island characters. It was a fun read.

I love the Devon Island Series

I love any book that deals with the characters from Devon's Island. Even grumpy Gurdeep and her sunshine wife.

Lovely story, but I wanted more

Another good short story. I'm glad the author has returned to the Mars Colony series, and I'd love to see a full-length book three. But then, I also want another full-length Vigilaunte Justice book, so maybe I'm just greedy 😎

It's a lovely, cosy short, told from Gurdeep's perspective. My only criticism is that it's very short and I wanted it to last longer.
